Nick Abrahamson
MSLIS Program, Class of 2019
Research Librarian, Tulsa City-County Library
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional background.
“I have worked in libraries for 12 years, 10 1/2 or so as a paralibrarian. I graduated college from the University of Oklahoma in 2005 and though I’ve thought about going back to school for some time, it wasn’t until Fall of 2017 that I started exploring MSLIS programs and opportunities.”
What inspired you to pursue your Master of Science in Library and Information Science online from Syracuse University?
“I love working in libraries! I love it so much I don’t want to do anything else as a vocation. Before I applied for the Syracuse University LIS program, I had reached my ceiling at my job with the level of education I previously had. But even before I’ve graduated, I have been able to leverage my experience and the new insight I learned through the program into a professional librarian position.”
What are your career goals?
“I am fortunate that my short-term career goals (1-3 years post-graduation) came to fruition early. That goal was to apply and be hired as a librarian, which came to pass in March of 2019. My long-term goals include middle management and/or a branch manager position. Eventually, I hope to see myself in a leadership position in the system where I am currently employed.”
What has been your favorite class and why?
“Every class has been challenging in its own way, but the challenge has paid dividends almost immediately. That said Professor Stinnett’s Management for Information Professionals and the Inquiry-Based Instructional Design course taught by Professor Kirkland have been my favorite and the most directly applicable to my current job title.”
How has enrolling in an online program impacted your professional and personal life?
“I have already been able to leverage my learning from the program into a better job, which I’m confident is the first step in an upward career trajectory.”
