Admissions Overview
At Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, we seek students who are passionate about computing and who understand the broad impact that new technologies and ideologies can have on society.
Our students are interdisciplinary leaders with the ability to successfully meet the demands of a selective, rigorous graduate program.
Start Dates
Syracuse University offers program start dates four times per year, in January, April, July and October. Applications are now being accepted for the start dates listed below, and admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Application deadlines are subject to change. Please request information to receive any deadline updates via email, and check back regularly.
We encourage you to submit your application as soon as possible. Students who submit by the priority application deadline will receive admissions decisions first and be able to connect with Syracuse University faculty and resources sooner.
Additionally, for students who submit by the priority deadline, the application fee of $75 is reduced to $45. If you are interested in applying for an on-campus program, please access that application here.

Application Requirements
Prospective students should have a strong interest in computing and computer systems and further developing the necessary skills to take on advanced computing and cybersecurity challenges.
The application review board takes a holistic approach when reviewing applicants. We take into consideration all facets of a student’s background including, but not limited to: undergraduate degree, mathematical competency, additional education completed, GPA, related work experience and background.
The review board looks for an undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, or a related STEM field with an average GPA of 3.0 or better. Some applicants also hold a master’s degree, but this is not required for admission to the program.
To ensure that students are well prepared for the academic rigor of the online master’s in engineering programs, the college offers two preparatory courses. Learn more about our preparatory courses.

Official Transcripts
You will be required to submit official degree-bearing transcripts from all academic institutions you have attended. You may be required to submit transcripts from the other academic institutions you have attended as well. Please send transcripts to:

Resume
In a current business resume, list any relevant professional experience, including title, dates and full-time or part-time status.
Letters of Recommendation
You will be required to submit two letters of recommendation from supervisors or peers.

Personal Statement
Provide a personal statement, written entirely by you with no outside assistance, detailing why you wish to study for the degree you have chosen. Please describe how your academic and professional experience has prepared you for this program. Please make sure to elaborate on any professional, hands-on computing experience. Lastly, please describe your career goals and how completing this program will help you to achieve them.
Your statement should be double-spaced, approximately 500 words and include your name and date of birth on each page. The file should be in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF format.
GRE Test Scores
The College of Engineering and Computer Science aims to support future students in any way possible. As such, the GRE is currently not required for students to apply.

Application Fee
The nonrefundable application fee for all programs is $75. If you apply before the priority deadline, the application fee will be reduced to $45.
Application fee waivers are available for active-duty service members, veterans and current Syracuse University undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and employees.

International Applicants
If you are an international applicant or your native language is not English, the TOEFL or the IELTS exam is required. Learn more about requirements for international applicants.
Academic and Prerequisite Preferences by Degree
Due to the rigor of the online master’s in engineering programs, applicants typically have a bachelor’s degree from the following fields with an average GPA of 3.0 or better. Bachelor’s degree requirements vary by program:
M.S. in Cybersecurity:
- A bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, computer engineering or a related field from an accredited institution with an average GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Demonstrated core competencies in basic systems knowledge, data structures, discrete mathematics and high-level programming (C and C++) are recommended.
M.S. in Computer Engineering:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering or a related field from an accredited institution with an average GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Demonstrated core competencies in discrete mathematics, calculus, data structures, programming (C and C++) and computer organization are recommended.
M.S. in Computer Science:
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering or a related field from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or better.
- Demonstrated core competencies in discrete mathematics, calculus, data structures, programming (C and C++) and computer organization are recommended.
